Gatherings are held for the North and South Island every year. They are attended by Forest & Bird members, branch committee representatives, board members, and staff.

North Island Gathering

Friday 27 to Sunday 29 October

The 2017 North Island Gathering is being hosted by members of the Horowhenua, Kapiti-Mana, Manawatū and Rangitikei Branches and will be held at Tatum Park, Manakau, (just south of Levin) Horowhenua. This year you will not need to provide your own bedding and, Tatum Park are catering all our meals.

Trips include:

  • A bird watching/beach Walk on Waikawa Beach
  • Lake Papaitonga: Papaitonga Scenic Reserve
  • Bush walk –Let’s run a MicroBioBlitz in a local Bush Reserve

South Island Gathering

Friday 10 to Sunday 12 November, 
Kinzett Lounge, Murchison Sports Centre, Murchison

IMPORTANT: Please register and book accommodation ASAP! Accommodation is very tight in Murchison due to disruptions to SH1.


Our theme for this year’s gathering is focussed on the ever-present question of predator control.  Can we create a Predator Free NZ?  Is it possible, how and using what technologies?  What role does Forest & Bird need to play – from advocacy to hands on?  How does this shape our work?  What challenges do we face?  
Friday daytime (optional extra): Rafting trip on Buller River visiting stretches of river of conservation interest!

Friday evening:
Gather and meet at the Rivers Café for a local welcome. Buy your own evening meal on site.  
Bat-spotting opportunity near Murchison town ship (weather permitting)

Saturday morning:
Keynote speakers and panel discussions on the theme – Speakers include:  Nicola Toki (DOC Threatened Species Ambassador), Kevin Hackwell (Forest & Bird and Predator Free), Nik Joice (Rotoiti Mainland Island Project), David Bowden (Forest & Bird Project Manager), Graeme Elliott (DOC Battle for our Birds), Speaker to be confirmed from Zero Invasive Predators (ZIP) 

Saturday afternoon:
Choice of field trips including braided river bird count, visit to Buller River earthquake section, and participation in local restoration project. 
Saturday evening:
Pre-dinner workshops and discussions on the theme; Dinner; Public-invited key-note speaker: Craig Potton “Landscapes & Images”

Sunday morning:
Session with the Board on the “Future of the Society”; workshops on “Telling Conservation Stories” and final keynote address on Forest & Bird and Iwi:  Developing Relationships (Melanie Nelson).  

Post-gathering: Optional field trip to the Matiri valley.

Cost:  $90 – 100 (accommodation and breakfasts not included). Rafting trip is extra.
