Nelson-Tasman: Planting at Ronga Scenic Reserve

Planting in a small landlocked DOC reserve in Rai Valley filled with remarkable giant totara, matai and kahikatea. It has the "best by far" collection of lowland ribbonwood. Excitingly this site has also become one of the most recent known roost areas of long-tailed bats - with bats recorded over the clear spring-fed pools and along the Opouri and Ronga Rivers that wrap around the reserve on 3 sides.   In conjunction with Marlborough Branch, Forest & Bird have embarked on a planting project to help restore the forest around these giant trees. Each year we plant 1000 trees and, with the help of Pacific Discoveries, Outward Bound and DOC, maintain weed control. Join Forest & Bird team, and enjoy a morning or day planting. Bring lunch & drink, a spade, gardening gloves and warm clothing - BBQ provided for lunch. Meet outside the Brick Oven in Rai Valley by 9.45am or on site at 10am. Contact Julie 5450989 if wishing to share transport.
